Günther Uecker gained great reputation with his white painted, relief-like nail pictures and is now one of the most important contemporary German artists; his prints fetch up to 8,500 euro at international auctions

Nails play a central role in Günther Uecker’s work as material for his nail reliefs and embossed prints. Also as a motif they are often used. Just like in this lithograph in colors from 1992, in which a headless nail shank is the determining element of the composition. It is complemented by the full sheet all-over structure from brush gestures and nail shapes.

The lithograph in colors is signed and dated lower right in pencil ‘Uecker 92’, and dedicated lower left in pencil ‘für Josef Kovacs’. The sheet is in very good condition. The full sheet image measures 60 x 42 cm.



Günther Uecker (born 1930)

Günther Uecker studied painting in Wismar and Berlin-Weißensee from 1949 to 1953. He left the GDR and moved to West Germany to continue his studies at the art academy in Düsseldorf under Otto Pankok. Already in 1956/57, he created his first relief-like ‘nail paintings’, for which he is internationally known today. Some of his art can be classified as kinetic art. He represented Germany in 1970 and 1972 at the Biennale in Venice and took more than once part in the documenta. He was a professor at the academy in Düsseldorf from 1974 to 1995, and has won numeral awards. Günther Uecker lives and works in Düsseldorf. (fea)
