Günther Uecker gained great reputation with his white painted, relief-like nail pictures and is now one of the most important contemporary German artists; his prints fetch up to 8,500 euro at international auctions

A high rectangular area in brown wooden structure forms the basis of this color lithograph from the year 1991. Across it a loose network of black nail shapes and brush strokes in different lengths and widths is laid. This creates a two-dimensional, graphical variation of the famous white nail reliefs by the artist.

The lithograph in colors is signed and dated lower right in pencil ‘Uecker 91’ inscribed lower left in pencil ‘e/a Brett I’ and dedicated lower center in pencil ‘Für Josef Kovacs’. The sheet bears a small, insignificant handling crease in the right margin and is in very good condition. The image measures 64.8 x 45 cm, the sheet 84.2 x 59.6 cm.



Günther Uecker (born 1930)

Günther Uecker studied painting in Wismar and Berlin-Weißensee from 1949 to 1953. He left the GDR and moved to West Germany to continue his studies at the art academy in Düsseldorf under Otto Pankok. Already in 1956/57, he created his first relief-like ‘nail paintings’, for which he is internationally known today. Some of his art can be classified as kinetic art. He represented Germany in 1970 and 1972 at the Biennale in Venice and took more than once part in the documenta. He was a professor at the academy in Düsseldorf from 1974 to 1995, and has won numeral awards. Günther Uecker lives and works in Düsseldorf. (fea)
