Günter Zint has been living in St. Pauli, the famous red light milieu in Hamburg, for decades. In his works the artist continually portrayed his local heroes that make life in St. Pauli so unbelievably touching. The present work depicts a typical representative of his hood.



The print is verso signed with pencil ‘Günter Zint’. Inspection with light from the side reveals tiny structural damages to the surface; these, however, do not affect the good overall impression of the image. The photo paper measures 40.7 x 31.6 cm and the size of the image is 39.5 x 30.3 cm.



Günter Zint (b.1941)

The German photographer Günter Zint is known for his photographs of the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Hippies, the Brokdorf Domenica, the Reeperbahn in Hamburg and the civil protests in Gorleben. He started his education with a traineeship at the Deutsche Presseagentur in Frankfurt am Main. As a qualified photographer he went to Sweden and England to work for two years. He then worked for the ‘Spiegel’ magazine in Hamburg for five years. He had his breakthrough with photographs of the ‘Star-Club’ in Hamburg. Zint later focused on social subjects and initiated the ‘Pan-Foto Agentur zur Verbreitung alternativer Pressefotos GmbH’ together with Hinrich Schultze, Marily Stroux, Gaby Schmidt, Jutta Stadach and Inge Kramer at the beginning of the 1980s. Exhibitions of his photographs have taken place all over Germany and the majority of his works is presented at the St. Pauli Museum in Hamburg. (cbo)
