G.S. Schalk Pottsville Marked Percussion Target Rifle

The top barrel flat is marked "G. SCHALK POTTSVILLE". George Schalk (1821-1893) of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, is listed in Frank Sellers' book "AMERICAN GUNSMITHS". The barrel has a false muzzle. The hammer and lock plate feature a scroll and punch dot engraving. The scrollwork extends to the artfully sculpted trigger guard, frame, upper tang and Swiss style buttplate, all of which are German silver components. The front sight is a hooded pin and a peep sight is mounted on the tang. A bullet starter and a brass tipped wooden ramrod come with the rifle. The nicely figured straight grip stock has checkering on the wrist.

Very good plus . The barrel, lock plate and hammer have a smooth crisp dark patina showing some minor dings towards the muzzle. The German silver is fine. The engraving is crisp. The stock is very fine with some minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically fine.
