"<I>Scott Carpenter</B></I>" (Malcolm Scott Carpenter, May 1, 1925) was selected in 1959 to participate in Project Mercury. "<I>Gordon Cooper</B></I>" (Leroy Gordon Cooper, Jr., March 6, 1927) was one of the seven original astronauts in Project Mercury.
