G.A. Nordham Marked Spencer Period Custom Heavy Octagonal Barreled Rifle
This is an example of an Old West gunsmith custom made hunting rifle with Spencer action. The rifle has a heavy, 28-inch, barrel with under lug and two ramrod pipes. The barrel is chambered for the .44 caliber, .56-46 Spencer Sporting Rifle Cartridge. The barrel has a dove-tailed nickel-silver front sight blade and a dovetailed sporting style rear sight. The top of the barrel is stamped with the maker's name and address: "G.A. NORDHEIM YREKA" between the rear sight and the receiver. The rifle retains the original Stabler magazine cut-off switch and has been fitted with double-set triggers. The loading lever has been re-shaped to accommodate the double-set triggers. The rifle has a walnut, key-fastened forearm with a pewter forend tip and nickel-silver escutcheons around the two key slots. The rifle retains the original military stock with the sling bar and ring removed and the sling swivel removed and filled. The top of the receiver is roll-stamped with the three-line legend: "SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS./PAT'D MARCH 6. 1860.". The serial number is located on the center of the receiver.

Good. The barrel has a plum-brown patina with scattered patches of age discoloration and light pitting. The receiver and other casehardened components have a silver-gray patina with scattered age discoloration and light pitting. The forearm cap has several scratches and dents but is in good overall condition. The stock is in fair condition with moderate-heavy handling wear and dark weathered burn marks along the lower edge that extends from the receiver to the butt. This is an interesting example of an Old West period custom Spencer Hunting Rifle.
