Full Stock .45 Caliber Flintlock Octagonal Rifle
Full Stock Flintlock rifle with great frontier character. This .45 caliber with 34” octagon rifled bore muzzle loading rifle is of the typical style mountain men and traders used to barter with Native Americans for furs and pelts. It is unmarked aside from a small British proof mark stamped in the cenbter of the iron patchbox which was fairly typical as historically these arms were made fairly
inexpensively using surplus and often bulk-imported British or other European parts. The stock of this rifle displays the “Roman Nose” gently curved butt stock profile and sports an iron butt plate with some worn scroll engraving on the top portion. The stock is decorated with scattered large and small brass tacks with a sunburst symbol on the left side by the cheek piece consisting of one large brass tack with “rays” formed from tiny tacks. There is also some very light line carving on the stock along the forearm to the muzzle. The iron trigger guard, like the patchbox and butt plate, appears to be another old surplus part utilized to make up a “trade rifle.” The browned barrel shows age and the iron parts already mentioned show great age and some rust pitting. The lock functionds correctly. The wrist exhibits a rawhide wrap repair held by aged brass tacks. Aside from this, the stock is sound and retains the wood ramrod. Portions of the butt stock show grime and darkening from age and use. Great western appearance and display. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
