Fugitive Slaves. Scarce pamphlet, A Defence f
Fugitive Slaves. Scarce pamphlet, A Defence for Fugitive Slaves, "against the Acts of Congress of Feb. 12, 1793, and Sept. 18, 1850." By Lysander Spooner, Boston: 1850, 72 pp. Magnificently bound in rich brown polished calf, green and coral French marbled boards, gilt title. A meticulously reasoned defense of slaves, claiming Acts of Congress to be unconstitutional, and the right of resistance. "...If these fugitive slave laws are unconstitutional, the delivery of persons into slavery under color of them, is a crime...(and) it is manifest that the states have no power to protect their citizens against any crimes...." The Fugitive Slave Law, so expertly attacked in this tract, led to the expanded scope of the Underground Railroad. Very fine.
