Frossard, Ed, and W.W. Hays. VARIETIES OF UNITED STATES CENTS OF THE YEAR 1794: DESCRIBED AND ILLUSTRATED. New York: Privately Printed, 1893. Thin 4to, original red cloth, decorated in black and gilt. 18 pages; 2 tinted autotype plates. Text block completely separated from binding, which is split at the spine. Inscribed to Henry Phelps by Frossard, dated 1893, on the front flyleaf. Good. The only copy this cataloguer has seen that is signed by Frossard, and the only signed copy in our database. First binding variant (crimson cloth, 1.0 inch decorative bands at top and bottom, no inner filigree to cover device). Until Sheldon's Early American Cents, the primary work on the subject. Only 250 copies printed, all of them poorly bound, with cracked hinges and other problems being the rule rather than the exception. I discussed this publication in my column in the Jan.-Mar. 2013 issue of The Asylum.
