Frontier-Era Winchester Model 1866 "Yellow Boy" Lever Action Rifle, 3rd Type, #38615 B, .44 RF cal., 24" octagonal barrel marked "Winchester's Repeating Arms, New Haven, CT/King's Improvement Patented March 29, 1866, October 16, 1860", has dovetailed blade front sight, and buckhorn rear sight. Distinctive brass receiver has removable sideplates, brass cartridge lifter, is stamped "(star) J. Cowan (star)" at top. Oil-finished walnut forend retained by a brass nosecap, matching straight grip buttstock has brass crescent buttplate with trapdoor for rods (not present), sling swivel at belly. Mfg'd 1870. Condition is good, retaining perhaps 15%-20% original blue with added finish, scattered dark spots of patina; and clear markings. Cleaned brass shows light toning. Forend shows a full-length hairline crack on the left side, reinforced by 3 tiny brass pins/staples; buttstock has been lightly sanded, is sound and smooth showing minimal marks, both have pleasing color, added finish. Action is crisp, clean bore shows overall moderate etching, good rifling. Est.: $6,000-$8,000. (Antique)
