1851 $50 LE Humbert Fifty Dollar, 880 Thous. AU58 NGC. Lettered Edge, No 50 on Reverse K-2, R.5. This piece has a small target at the center of the reverse. The denomination appears at the bottom of the obverse, where the number 50 is punched into the surface of the coin just left of a raised D. When the dies were made, the letters D and C where included below the eagle, with the blanks left so that the appropriate number of dollars and cents could be punched into the piece to indicate its actual value. While production was limited to pieces of the 50 dollar size, the original intention was to produce large examples and others of odd value. How exciting it would be for collectors today if Augustus Humbert had stuck to the original plan, producing pieces of various and unusual denominations.
The 1851 date does not appear on either the obverse or the reverse, but rather, is included as part of the edge lettering. Each individual segment of the edge was lettered, reading AUGUSTUS / HUMBERT / UNITED / STATES / ASSAYER / OF GOLD / CALIFORNIA / 1851. This example is a lovely green-gold representative with considerable luster. Delicate orange toning has formed around certain devices, adding to the overall eye appeal and desirability of this large gold piece. A few small surface marks are visible on each side, consistent with the grade.
From The Twin Hollows Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
