<B>1889 $3 AU58 PCGS.</B></I> The three dollar gold series ended, like T.S. Eliot's <I>The Hollow Men,</B></I> "not with a bang but a whimper." Just 2,300 pieces were struck for the final issue, and a number of numismatic scholars speculate that many were melted at the Mint. This shining amber-gold piece did not meet such a fate; it left the grounds, and judging from the light friction on each side, it may have seen brief circulation. Suitably struck with few marks and excellent eye appeal. Purchased in the 1930's at face value by Karl Stecher Sr. from coins turned in by the public as per President Roosevelt's March 9, 1933 directive.
