1866 $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. As the 3,080-piece mintage suggests, the 1866 Liberty Head quarter eagle is a scarce coin in any grade. In Choice AU, the condition of the coin in this sale, PCGS has seen just four pieces, and a mere two examples finer (2/07). Peach-gold surfaces reveal traces of luster in the protected areas, and the design features have benefited from a well executed strike. Both sides are remarkably clean. Purchased in the 1930's at face value by Karl Stecher Sr. from coins turned in by the public as per President Roosevelt's March 9, 1933 directive. An envelope accompanies, and has the pencil notes "1866 2.50 ex f was proof? Value $25.00."
From The Stecher Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)

Important notice:
