<B>1860-C $2 1/2 XF45 PCGS.</B></I> Variety 19-J. The 1860-C Liberty Head quarter eagle, with a mintage of 7,469 pieces, was the final quarter eagle struck by the Charlotte Mint. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) write that it is always seen weakly struck on rough planchets. This Choice XF example, while having some inoffensive contact marks scattered over each side, exhibits rather pleasing apricot-gold surfaces tinted with wisps of red at the margins. The initial strike was relatively strong, as most of the star centers are sharp, as is most of Liberty's hair. Some softness is noted on the eagle's neck and legs. Purchased in the 1930's at face value by Karl Stecher Sr. from coins turned in by the public as per President Roosevelt's March 9, 1933 directive.
