<B>1856-O $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS.</B></I> This is quite a scarce date from a mintage of 21,100 coins, a much smaller New Orleans mintage than during the previous few years. Most of the reason is the diminished supply of gold available to this facility from California after the start of the San Francisco Mint. This Choice AU example has considerable luster with pleasing yellow and orange-gold color. The strike is somewhat weak, typical of examples from this mint. Purchased in the 1930's at face value by Karl Stecher Sr. from coins turned in by the public as per President Roosevelt's March 9, 1933 directive.
