<B>1844-D $2 1/2 AU53 PCGS.</B></I> Variety 5-I. This is considered the scarcer of two known die varieties for the date. The left base of the mintmark is attached to the top of the small 1 in the denomination, and the interior space of the mintmark is entirely open. The other variety has part of the arrow feather visible inside the mintmark. This piece is sharply struck in pale green-gold with slightly reflective fields. Light abrasions are consistent with the grade. Karl Stecher, Sr. purchased this piece from the Guttag Bros. of New York during the 1930s.
