1844-C $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. Variety 6-E. The 1844-C is a scarce coin in terms of total numbers known, with only 80-90 pieces believed extant today in all grades. It is also a significant condition rarity. This is from two factors: first, Bechtler coinage had been largely discredited by 1844, which placed heavier demand on Charlotte gold for local usage; and second, a fire in the Charlotte Mint in July of that year stopped production until 1846, which meant the coins struck in 1844 circulated even more extensively. The most recent Condition Census for this issue lists three of the top five coins in AU58. This piece has bright reddish-tinted gold surfaces with a hint of semi-reflectivity in the fields. Most '44-C quarter eagles are seen with heavy circulation marks, but the only one on this piece is located in the field below Liberty's chin. The obverse is better defined than many examples of this issue, but the reverse is softly detailed, as always. Purchased in the 1930's at face value by Karl Stecher Sr. from coins turned in by the public as per President Roosevelt's March 9, 1933 directive. A collector's envelope with notations "1844c 2.50 f" included with lot.
From The Stecher Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)

Important notice:
