1839-O $2 1/2 AU53 PCGS. Although the New Orleans Mint began coinage production in 1838, this issue marks the first gold coin produced in Louisiana and also the only Classic Head gold coinage issue. Two die varieties are known with a wide fraction (as offered here) or a close fraction. They are distinguished by the widely spaced fraction in the denominator on this variety, or a closely spaced fraction with both the 1 and the 2 joined to the fraction bar. This piece is also a late die state with extensive reverse cracks. The surfaces are somewhat matte in appearance with deep yellow-gold color that is accented by splashes of attractive orange toning. Karl Stecher, Sr. purchased this piece for $6.70 as lot 462 in a July 1940 auction held by Syracuse Coin Shop of Syracuse, N.Y. Envelope from Syracuse Coin Shop with notations "July 1940 auction Cost $6.70 v.f." included with lot.
From The Stecher Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)

Important notice:
