<B>1839-C $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS.</B></I> Three different die varieties are known for the 1839-C Classic Head quarter eagles. The obverse of this variety has the mintmark over the left side of the 3 in the date, and the reverse is identified by the left-leaning first A in AMERICA. All three die varieties are about equally scarce, and none can be called rare. This example has excellent luster with green-gold surfaces. Both sides have minor handling marks that are typical for these coins. Purchased in the 1930's at face value by Karl Stecher Sr. from coins turned in by the public as per President Roosevelt's March 9, 1933 directive.
