1904 $20 PR64 Cameo PCGS. Although perhaps unconsciously tainted by their abundant 1904 business strike counterparts, proof double eagles from this year are on equal footing with other 20th century specimen strikings of this largest gold denomination. Nearly two generations after their introduction, proof gold coinage in this country was largely a numismatic cult of the extremely wealthy. Whenever production of proofs was increased, the overage almost invariably had to be later melted as unsold. No doubt, the increased production of 158 proof twenties in 1903 met this fate and the mintage a year later was reduced to a mere 98 pieces.
As America's influence around the world grew ever stronger and the Roosevelt trust busting era was nearing its height, 1904 also marked the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase and the opening of the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. The familiar, widely despised Morgan dollar was discontinued after this year and would not be revived until 1921.
This splendid double eagle boasts aesthetic appeal that places it on equal footing with many Gem survivors. Both sides exhibit rich, uniform golden color with an outstanding degree of contrast between the glassy mirrored fields and the design elements. A few small spots of discoloration along the obverse border from 8 o'clock to 1 o'clock are more of a curiosity than a distraction, but a similar spot between RU in TRUST on the reverse stands in the way of a Gem designation. Population: 6 in 64, 7 finer (12/06).
From The RNB Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)

Important not
