1986 S$1 American Silver Eagle--Reverse Struck on an Emery Disc--PCGS. Although the legends of this piece state it is "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," this coin contains no silver at all, since it was struck on a wafer-thin emery disc. An emery disc is thin, round, granular, and adhesive-backed. It is typically affixed to a buffing wheel, and was presumably used at the Mint to help prepare dies. Somehow, an emery disc with an unpeeled backing covered a silver eagle planchet at the moment of strike. The silver planchet (not included) blocked the obverse die, so the front of this gray-brown piece has a reverse die impression, while the other side shows an incused impression of the reverse along with previous printing on the backing.
From The Pacific Coast Mint Error Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
