<B>1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Octagonal--Scratched--NCS. Unc Details.</B></I> A lengthy scratch on the reverse extends from the lower rim, through the A in SAN, the owl's wing, and over MA in PANAMA. A pair of tiny contact marks are also noted in the upper right reverse field. The obverse shows the typical satin-like luster and undisturbed surfaces of a Mint State example. Both sides display lovely, even green-gold coloration.<BR> From <I>The Encyclopedia of United States Silver & Gold Commemorative Coins (1990)</B></I>: "The Panama-Pacific International Exposition, celebrating the opening of the Panama Canal (by the <I>S.S. Ancon,</B></I> August 15, 1914), was set up late in 1914 through early 1915 on a 635-acre site near the Marina in San Francisco: some of Bernard Maybeck's buildings erected for it still survive, notably the colonnade at the Exploratorium at the foot of Lyon Street." The Panama-Pacific Exposition was the most expensive event of its type ever held in the United States, up to that time. Breen reported that the total cost was in excess of fifty million dollars. Fortunately for its organizers, the Exposition drew 19 million visitors. Some of those people attended the June 15, 1915 ceremony where the first octagonal fifty-dollar pieces were struck on the fairgrounds themselves.
