1652 Willow Tree Shilling--Damaged--NCS. Good Details. 62.8 grains. Noe 3-C, Cr. 3-F & G, High R.6. When dealing with Willow Tree coinage, one thing to remember is the method of manufacture of these pieces. These coins were struck on a rocker press, which means that bends are inherent in the production process. It is not known if NCS was referring to the bend in this coin as "damage" or if they were actually referring to several shallow scratches on each side.
We can do no better than to quote the catalog description of this coin from the Hain Family Collection when it was sold in 2002:

"Very pale gray in the centers, deeper in places around the peripheries. On the obverse, the tree trunk and its roots show. In the legend, the letters MAASETS are legible. On the reverse, the date is indistinct, X in the denomination is clear, and the peripheral legend WENDNDOM shows. Some light scratches are noted. The exact rarity rating of N.3-C is unsettled. The writer Michael Hodder has seen 10 to 12 of these and suspects there may be as many as 20. The variety is not quite as rare as N.1-A but these two are very close in terms of availability."

It seems indisputable from examination of the coins themselves that rocker dies were used on Willow Tree coinage. Which type is uncertain. According to Louis Jordan, it may have been a hand-cranked gear press or some version of a sway press. " ... it is probably the Massachusetts Mint used gear technology rather than the more primitive lever technology of the sway press." These early American coins are representative of not only the beginnings of coinage in North America, but they also represent an interesting transition period in the use of mint technology.
Ex: Stearns Collection (Mayflower Coin Auctions, 12/66), lot 7; Hain Family Collection (Stack's, 1/02), lot 8, where it brought $16,100.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
