1851 $50 LE Humbert Fifty Dollar, 880 Thous.--Repaired, Whizzed--NCS. XF Details. K-2, R.5. Since Augustus Humbert was the United States Assayer of Gold in California in 1851, there is a certain logic to including these pieces as a part of the regular U.S. series of coinage. As Don Kagin pointed out in his reference on the series, "this provisional mint operated very much like a regular U.S. branch mint." This is a reasonably well detailed coin for the grade with localized weakness on the eagle's breast and around the peripheral lettering (as always). Numerous small to medium-sized abrasions are scattered over each side, as expected on such a large gold coin. The surfaces are bright from cleaning, and it appears that the area around the date has had some repair work done.
From The Frank J.
