1838 P50C Seated Liberty Half Dollar, Judd-79a, Pollock-86, R.7, PR63 PCGS. Ex: Eliasberg but not from the 1996 Bowers and Merena sale, but rather, a piece that has not previously been on the market. The obverse is the Seated Liberty design, without drapery, introduced to regular issue coinage in 1839. The reverse has an eagle in flight to the West, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and HALF DOLLAR below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. This is essentially a reduced version of Gobrecht's 1838 silver dollar pattern, although with slight design differences. Like most examples of Judd-79a, this is a so-called "original" struck prior to the formation of radial die cracks on the reverse, also used in the later die states with many other obverse dies. About a dozen of these pattern half dollars are known. This piece is a Premium Gem proof and it is especially beautiful. The obverse is fully mirrored with vibrant blue, orange, and ivory color, while the reverse has light gold at the centers, surrounded by peripheral blue and violet color.
From The Collection of Louis E.
