1908-S<$10> MS64 PCGS. The tiny mintage of 59,850 was a harbinger, although numerous high grade examples exist. Most of the high grade coins come from two hoards, one of them discovered in the 1940s, with a second European hoard in the 1970s, according to the Breen Encyclopedia. This lovely example offers consistent, deep, rich orange-gold coloration throughout, with superb eye appeal. Were it not for a light pinscratch across Liberty's cheek, only visible at a certain angle, this coin would likely rate a Gem grade, as the few scattered abrasions seen elsewhere are extremely light and undistracting. As it is, this piece is high-end and delightful for the grade. Population: 26 in 64, 32 finer (9/06).
From The Clifton Rodenburg Collection.
