From Life CDV of CSA General Franklin Gardner,<p>with imprint of “Theo. Lillienthal, New Orleans” issued in 1863. A transplanted Yankee and ex-regular, Gardner won two brevets in Mexico before throwing his lot with the Confederacy and joining as a regular Lt. Colonel of infantry in March 1861. Promoted to Brigadier General in April 1862 Gardner led a cavalry brigade at Shiloh and an infantry brigade during Bragg’s invasion of Kentucky and had earned a second star by year’s end. Major General Gardner then assumed command of the strategic Port Hudson defenses and held firm against the combined weight of two Union corps, finally surrendering only after the fall of Vicksburg. Gardner was not exchanged until August 1864 and ended the war in the Mississippi Department serving under General Taylor. Franklin Gardner died in Vermillionville, Louisiana not long after the war ended in 1873.<p>Provenance: Zacharie Family, New Orleans.<p>Cartes in VG condition with minor mottling.
