Frolicking Fish” By Bonnie MacLeary-bronze “Frolicking Fish” By Bonnie MacLeary,
“Frolicking Fish” By Bonnie MacLeary, 1925. MacLeary was born in San Antonio, Texas and sculpted her first “piece” from the mud of the San Antonio River at age six. She grew up and became celebrated for her smooth textured and idyllic statues of women and children, many of which were meant to be placed in gardens. Art deco nudes like this one depicted the woman in a state of movement, her perfect proportions moving contemporaneously with her surroundings. They echo the style of Greek sculptures such as Polydorus and Praxiteles, where movement was visible even in the texture of the stone. Bronze statues like MacLeary’s are no different, the fish and woman are one in the same and are a pleasure to be viewed from all sides and angles. The statue measures 18.5” and is signed on the base as “Bonnie MacLeary ‘25.” Courtesy of J. P.
