Fritz Wotruba (1907-1975), Bronze of a Seated Figure, 1954
The present bronze is the work of the Austrian sculptor Fritz Wotruba, dated circa 1954. The abstract geometric form depicts a seated figure. The human figure was the artist’s favorite subject, which he visited throughout his oeuvre. The present figure illustrates Wotruba’s characteristic imagery, which is determined by a reduction of forms, clarity and monumentality, but also shows the influence of the late Cubism.

The bronze is signed on the reverse to the lower edge, ‘Wotruba’, and dated ‘54’. It is in good condition with light wear. The height of the figure is 20.5 cm.

Fritz Wotruba (1907-1975)

Born in Vienna, Fritz Wotruba was one of Austria's most important sculptors of the 20th century. His work is determined by the geometrical abstraction with the cube as the basic form. However, he did not understand himself as an exponent of the ‘Postcubism’. Wotruba was trained in the techniques of engraving, stamping, drawing and sculpture. During the Second World War, the artist emigrated to Switzerland. From 1945, he worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1948 and in 1952, he exhibited at the Venice Biennale. He was also represented three times at the documenta in Kassel. Many statues of Wotruba are in public parks in Vienna. His biggest work is the so-called ‘Wotruba Church’ in Vienna-Mauer, whose completion in 1976 he did not experienced.
