Fritz Beinke (1842-1907), Family Portait with Dog, around 1900
The present painting is a typical genre scene by the German artist Fritz Beinke and was painted around 1900. The work focuses on the family life in the country and depicts a mother with a baby on her lap, watching her children at play with the dog. The romantic depiction is a beautiful example of the artist’s oeuvre, which reflects the artistic approach of the Dusseldorf School.

The painting is in good condition considering its age. There are light areas of retouching at the cheek and the eyes of the mother as well as at the eyes of some children. The edges show light marks, where the frame has rubbed and further light areas of retouching. The canvas is slightly dirty due to its age. The wooden frame shows small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 83 x 100 cm and the size of the stretcher measures 65 x 80.5 cm.

Fritz Beinke (1842-1907)

The German painter Fritz Beinke attended the Academy of Arts in Dusseldorf, where he was trained by Karl Ferdinand Sohn (1805-1867) and Eduard Bendemann (1811-1889), amongst others. This was followed by a number of study trips through Germany and Northern Italy. The genre scenes by Ludwig Knaus (1829-1910) revealed an important source of inspiration and finally lead to his specification in genre painting. Fritz Beinke was a follower of the Dusseldorf School and his works are mainly in private hands, today.
