French flintlock powder tester, mid to late 19th century, of high quality, made with full pistol type lock and stock and mountings, 11-5/8” overall. The graduating wheel, numbered 1 through 13. Metal surfaces shows a light grey to brown finish. The original spring, stand, and all small parts are retained. The stock and mounts are good, metal surfaces show light erosion and pinprick pitting. The trigger guard shows collection #287 tag attached. These powder testers were important to test the powder when purchased. It was not unknown that dealers would sell charcoal or inferior powder which would cause a tragic event if a firearm was necessary. This ingenious powder tester was obviously made from pistol parts and the gunsmith just added a plate, wheel, spring, stand and breech to a flintlock pistol and flattened the sides of the forend. A very good and original specimen throughout. From the Robert Petersen Collection. Est: $900 - $1,800
