Of Louis XVI style, beveled glass door, porcelain convex dial with cherub painted design, urn top with two white marble pillars, supporting the drum top with side ormolu pillars surmounted by finials, open work gilt hands, mask sunburst pendulum, circular plated movement stamped JAPY FRERES (founded in 1771 and closed in the 1960's ) and marked 6292 and 53, 8-day time and half-hour bell striking, anchor escapement and outside countwheel. H: 39.4 cm; W: 22.9 cm; D: 10.2 cm (15½ x 9 x 4 inch). Circa 1870. Provenance: A private collector who used to be a NAWCC (National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors, Inc.) member; Chan Collection, Toronto.

Remarks: A polychrome painted dial with cherub on a French clock is rare (if painted, usually of foliage designs). The outside countwheel and Louis XVI portico style indicate that this clock was made before 1880.

Japy Freres was a famous and multi-award winning French clockmaker.
