<td width="100%">
We offer a truly wonderful item. It is a seal, which we believe, dates from the period 1780-89. If Tardy is to be believed the item was made in Toulouse in this period.

It consists of a cylinder in silver with a seal at one end. The base pulls out and we imagine that it was designed to hold the sealing wax. The second capped bit consists of a a stricker and a pullout candle holder to melt the sealing wax.

The marks, as illustrated consist of a maker's mark which resembles a spider with the letters CR on either side, the word Depose (Registered in English) and what appear in several cases to be two discharge marks for Toulouse together. This being the boars head.
A person advised me and it is always possible that he is right, the mark indicates that the piece was made in the early 19th century as the boars head mark was also used by the Paris assay office, but this is only a possibility as the head appear twice on a couple of places on this piece. It is always possible, similar to provincial offices in the UK, that there was an effort to avoid duty and in the later case a mark was used several times to indicate that the duty had been paid.
