French Lefaucheux Engraved 12mm Pinfire Revolver, Like Model 1858 - Antique
Title: French Lefaucheux Engraved 12mm Pinfire Revolver, Like Model 1858 - Antique  Make: Lefaucheux  Model: Pinfire Revolver (Like a Model 1858)  Serial Number: 283  Year of Manufacture: circa 1860s  Caliber: 12 MM Pinfire  Action Type: Single Action Pinfire Revolver  Markings: The right side of the frame is marked "LEOPOLD COLLETTE". The left side of the barrel is marked "E. LEFAUCHEUX / INVR BREVETE" / V proof mark and "152". There is an "ELG" in an oval on the cylinder. The majority of the metal surfaces have been nicely engraved.  Barrel Length: about 6 3/8"  Sights / Optics: The front sight is a dovetail set blade. The rear sight is notched hammer.  Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth bone, showing much age and natural grain. The panels have shrunk over time but remain crack free and complete. The surfaces have been polished from years of handling. These were aftermarket panels. There are scattered marks throughout. The fit is very good and the grips look great on this pistol. The grips rate in about Very Good overall condition.  Type of Finish: None Remains  Finish Originality: None Remains  Bore Condition: The bore is dark and the rifling is actually sharp and deep. There is even but mild erosion in the bore.  Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 0% of its metal finish. The metal is a light brown/gray from natural age. There are many scattered areas of surface erosion. The wear and age is very natural and the engraving remains quite sharp and deep. This engraving is definitely hand cut and shows consistent age in the cuts. The screw heads are serviceable but deformed. We believe that the barrel assembly is from a different gun, but of the right model and caliber. The markings are light but generally legible. Overall, this handgun rates in about Very Good condition.  Mechanics: The action functions beautifully well. We did not fire this handgun.  Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None  Our Assessment: This is a beautifully well-made Pinfire revolver, the likes of which even saw their way to the colonies for use in the civil war. During the American Civil War both sides fielded a wide variety of revolvers, including the M1858. The Federal forces purchased over 12,000 M1858 revolvers, primarily supplying them to cavalry forces in 1862. However, these Pinfire revolvers were replaced in service later in the war as more Colt and Remington revolvers became available and the flaws in the cartridge design became apparent. It is discussed that the discharge of Pinfire rounds in the pockets and cases of soldiers is a primary reason for their slow and only small scale adoption by our forces.  CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This antique handgun can be sold in California.Â
