<B>Thomas Pownall Signed French & Indian War Commission.</B></I> One page, 14" x 12", February 20, 1760, Massachusetts Bay. A partly-printed military appointment of Erza Newhall as an Ensign under the Command of Brig General Timothy Ruggles. Newhall served as a lieutenant colonel at Bunker Hill and the writings of George Washington reference a letter from Washington directly to Newhall dated Feb. 8, 1783, asking him to make sure the 5th Massachusetts regiment was prepared for review. This present document is signed by Thomas Pownall, long time friend and correspondent of Ben Franklin. Pownall was a firm and consistent friend of the American idea. In 1767 he opposed parliamentary taxation of the colonies. In 1777, six years before the peace, he was the first to announce that England's "sovereignty over America was gone forever." The document is mounted, foxed, and has evidence of early restoration at the fold lines. The wax seal is intact.
