French India, Silver rupee, Alamparai mint, pseudo-mint name ‘Arkat’, in the name of Muhammad Shah, RY 23, a small crescent symbol in lowest divide on the obverse, 11.30 grams. J Brockmeyer published these rupees in JONS 194 (2008) with references quoted from the diary of Ananda Ranga Pillay. His research suggests that a French mint was located at Alamparai, North of Pondicherry where the earliest differentiable French rupees were struck, with a mark of a crescent on the obverse. A mint was subsequently opened at Pondicherry proper, which struck coins with the crescent mark on the reverse. The mint at Alamparai most likely closed soon after 1743. Very Fine, Rare.
