French Colonies - 5 Sols 1670-A PCGS AU50 Noted : Lec-186 and Pedigreed
Original attractive steel grey toning over lovely, glossy surfaces. Whether the slight softness on the high points is truly coin wear or die wear is difficult to determine. In any case, this is a truly beautiful example of this scarce and popular coin. This coin is considerably better struck up, and generally more appealing than the piece graded NGC AU50, from the Doug Robbins collection, and sold for USD 7,500 by Heritage on April 20, 2018. In fact, is more attractive than most that have been assigned higher technical grades. Struck according to an edict of King Louis XIV for uus in New France, Acadie, the french colonies in what is now Newfoundland, and the French West Indies, these coins were considered overvalued, and were poorly accepted by the colonists. Effectively a failed experiment, few entered circulation, and most of those struck were subsequently remelted.
