Intriguing letter signed by celebrated French Revolutionary Admiral ''Latouche Treville''. He describes the horrific treatment of French captive soldiers on an unknown island he calls ''Tizago.'' The admiral was a hero in both the American and French Revolutionary wars as well as the Napoleonic wars. The French language letter translates to: ''...The crew of the ship Tordeaux wrecked in 1773 on the island of Tizago, where they had found the most awful captivity. Some could not be bought back, and the Captain who had served under orders, was made to recite the tale of cruel treatment to which they were exposed...The island of Tizago there being known only by the cruelties that the inhabitants have on the Europeans, and even the Negroes who fall into their hands. The Governor and the officers were persuaded that there existed none of that...In any other circumstances, it would have been enough to abandon the...expedition, but the precise orders he had received, induced him to continue the journey...'' Card-style letter measures 7.25'' x 9''. Light toning, else near fine.
