British politician (1866-1941) who served as governor-general of Canada and as viceroy and governor-general of India. ALS signed “Willingdon,” two pages, 6.75 x 8.75, Government House letterhead, January 12, 1923. In part: "I'm very glad all went well about the Kheddar whc: was I hope a success. Glad H. E. managed to remain in the plate during the review. He is uneasy there as a rule! I quite agree that these d—d experts in all departments always disagree, & it's hopeless to get a satisfactory or unanimous opinion on anything. However I am most grateful to you for the orders you have sent, & if anything does go wrong you must d—n & lay the blame on me & my rotten foot...Having defeated one onslaught, the Gov't. of Madras is again tottering to its fall. But at least I can say that though things will be bad enough they won’t be so bad as on other provinces, for the Swarajists have won in those provinces all down the line. But we shall get through in the end." In very good to fine condition, with staining to the right edge of the signed page.
