Document concerning the freedom of a possible African-American descendant of George Washington. 24 April 1811 document signed by two New York City Aldermen reads in part, “City and County of New-York, James Grant of the fourth Ward, of the said city, being duly sworn saith that he has for three years last past, been well acquainted with Norman Washington a Black man, that the said Norman resides in the said city, that he is about the age of Twenty Seven years, and was born at Mount Vernon in the State of Virginia…and that the said Norman was born free…” From MountVernon.org: “There are records at Mount Vernon showing that there were free blacks who worked for the Washington family during the 18th century…'' Norman Washington, therefore, may have been the son of a freed slave who gave him the last name of her employer, or he may have been the son of a Washington. One page measuring 7.75” x 6”. Nicks at edges of fold, reinforced at mid-horizontal fold. Light browning at edges and fold. On watermarked laid paper. Very good condition.
