Middle to late 19th century Gillespie County, Texas (possibly Fredericksburg) handmade settee is constructed largely of 1-1/2" thick cypress. The piece measures 73" long, 28" tall and 25" deep. The notable feature of this settee is the cyma curved design, namely, the seatback and legs.

The seatback has a classic "double cyma reversa design." As with most settees, the seatback is attached to arms by screws. The cyma reversa curved legs, which are mortised, receive the tenoned rails. These joints are secured by pegs.

The tenoned arm rails are turned. The design consists of combination of turnings. One of the arm rails has been recently replaced. Located below the turning is a __"X__" stretcher, which is tenoned to the arm posts, adding further stability to the piece.

The seat bottom consists of (15) 1"X4"X__" pine slats. The slats rest on a __"X__" cleat, attached to the rail. The slats are further secured by two ¼"X__" pieces of tubing or rods (probably added later). Most examples of settees and benches have the seat rails running the length of the piece. This settee has slats running the depth, suggesting it may have been originally a day bed with the seat back possibly added later. Moreover, there are no published examples of settees having turned arms as they were consistent with day bed construction.
