Frederick William Hulme (1816-1884), Forest Path, England, 1868
The present large-format painting is the work of the English artist Frederick William Hulme, and dates from 1868. The atmospheric composition depicts a forest path characterized by variations of light and shade. A woman sitting on the path makes the trees appear even more impressive. This very fine painting with its diverse flora and countless differentiated shades seems to be a paean to nature.

The painting is signed and dated lower right, ‘J. W. Hulme Oct. 1868 ‘. It is well presented. The paint surface shows little scattered paint losses, some areas of abrasion, slight soiling and some blemishes along the edges due to the framing. The font tree shows a scratch. Inspection under UV light reveals a small point of retouching to the sky on the upper right. The gilt wood frame shows minor wear. The overall dimensions, framed, are 119 x 89 cm. The stretcher measures 102 x 70.5 cm.
