British surgeon (1853–1923) who saved Edward VII’s life with an emergency appendectomy shortly before the coronation and who served as the personal physician to ‘Elephant Man’ John Merrick. ALS, two pages, 4.25 x 7, Gloster Hotel letterhead, August 11, 1917. Letter to Lord Sudley. In part: “I am extremely obliged to you for asking Lord Falkland to put my name down for the Yacht Squadron. This he has kindly done and I greatly appreciate the advantage, as the club is practically next door…I note that the hospital ships are now painted grey and armed.” In fine condition, with rough left edges to both pages and a uniform shade of mild toning.
