Frederick Goodhall RA (1822-1904)
THE WAYWORN
signed and dated [1853] lower left and with a signed manuscript letter relating to the work, pasted on reverse
watercolour over pencil
18 by 13cm., 7 by 5.25in.
Provenance:
A gift of the artist to S.C Hall Esq;
Anon. sale, 1855;
Thence with Frank A. Knight, London;
Private collection, Co. Dublin
A letter from the artist (verso) is headed 4 Camden Square, April 18th 1855, and concerns two works by Goodall: "...although the picture of the ‘Irish Girl’ and the drawing of the ‘Wayworn’ were presents from me, you would, in my opinion, be quite justified, under the present circumstances parting with them without asking my sanction". The present work is an excellent example of Goodall's Irish work, in which rustic peasants were depicted in a gentle, romantic manner which owed much to David Wilkie.
