The idea for McWilliam’s celebrated Women of Belfast series germinated circa
1972, in response to a wave of terrorist bomb blasts in the north during the
euphemistically termed "Troubles". A series of dynamic, angular bronzes
resulted, as well as a number of drawings. Some of these were exhibited at the
Dawson Gallery in 1973 and are now in the Ulster Museum and the Hugh Lane
Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in Dublin; the latter in particular hold six pen
and ink studies with wash, very similar to the present work.
