Frederick Douglass AQS
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Inspiring collection of signatures by prominent 19th century abolitionists, with the crown jewel being an autograph quotation signed by Frederick Douglass. Shortly after the end of the Civil War, Douglass writes, ''Right is of no sex, truth is of no color. We are the equal children of a common Father and all men are Brothers - Frederick Douglass - March 31, 1868''. This signed verse is contained in an autograph album bearing approximately 35 signatures, or autograph inscriptions signed, of 19th century abolitionists including: the wife and two daughters of John Brown, signed ''Mrs. John Brown'', Sarah Brown and Ellen Brown Fablinger; John S. Adams who writes ''Accept the kind regards of your friend, J.S. Adams''; J. Renwick Thompson; Frances E.W. Harper; Sarah E. Morse, wife of Samuel Morse; Aaron M. Powell who writes, ''All of every nationality are children of the loving All-Father; all should [be] helpers of each other; thus shall a true Christian civilization be attained.'' Album includes many more signatures and sentiments expressing equality among peoples. Most inscriptions are written one to a page in this octavo leather album, adorned in gilt. Album is very worn with front board detached and backstrip missing. Some dampstaining present on front and rear blank pages. Signed pages, however, remain in very good condition. Page signed by Douglass is near fine with only toning to margins. A beautiful expression of the 19th century abolitionist movement.
