Frederick Cook signs ''My Attainment of the Pole: Being the Record of the Expedition That First Reached the Boreal Center 1907-1909 / With the Final Summary of the Polar Controversy.'' Polar Publishing Co.: New York: 1911. He inscribes upon the front free endpaper, ''To Mr Frank C. Ayres with regards from Frederick A Cook / New York / Nov. 14, 1911''. Cook, a surgeon on Robert Peary's 1891-92 Arctic expedition, claimed to have reached the North Pole in 1908, a year before Peary's expedition. Although many believed him at the time, his claim was not substantiated and Peary actively campaigned to discredit him (thus the subtitle of this book). Most experts give Peary credit for the discovery. Minor edge wear to 7.5'' x 10'' brown cloth boards with gilt lettering and pictorial front board. Slight loosening of spine of 604pp. volume. Overall in very good plus condition.
