Collier & Son, NY, publisher; with original title cards. "Trailing Texas Cattle," is copyright 1904 by Frederic Remington. These prints are wonderful examples of Remington's ability to capture the raw, wild, exciting, and colorful West. Remington is arguably one of the most influential Western artists who ever lived. Frederic Sackrider Remington (1861-1909) was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer who specialized in the genre of Western American Art. His works are known for depicting the Western United States in the last quarter of the 19th century and featuring such images as cowboys, Native American Indians, and the US Cavalry. Collier’s thought so highly of Remington’s work, that in 1905, they began to issue color halftones after his paintings in portfolios and as separate prints. These were done in a number of sizes, over a number of years, and with different levels of quality. Interestingly, the early prints were called “Artists Proofs,” by Collier’s. The prints are the result of a 1903, contract between Remington and Collier's Magazine, and for the first time, the artist was paid to select his own Western subjects rather than simply illustrate the work of others. Remington destroyed over 100 of his paintings, and these rare Collier's prints remain the only existing testimony of many of those lost originals. These artist's proof prints are in very nice overall condition, some marring along outer margins. Bifold has some wear at edges and a few rub marks; There is some fraying along the spine cloth. Each measures approximately 24"L x 17.5"W. The printed area is approximately 19"L x 2.75"W, with wide margins making these excellent for framing.*
