Actor (born 1924) most notably famous for his roles as Benjamin Franklin and appearances in two episodes of The Twilight Zone in 1961. He gained early fame in the Army, following V-E Day, and later wrote, produced, directed, and starred in the ruckus burlesque of the opera Carmen, known as GI Carmen. Wayne is also famous for his roles in Broadway and London musicals, such as: Johnny Mercer’s Texas Lil' Darlin;’ South Pacific, playing the iconic Luther Billis opposite Mary Martin, Jane Powell, and Vickie Carr; as well as Leonard Bernstein's Wonderful Town. He went on to play Benjamin Franklin in a celebrated one-man show and a memorable two-part Bewitched episode on ABC Television. Wayne had over 300 guest roles, including two episodes of the acclaimed Twilight Zone in the early 1960s. Fascinating archive of correspondence to Wayne from fellow actors and members of the entertainment industry, consisting of approximately 62 signed letters, mostly TLSs. Signers include: Steve Allen (4), Ed Asner, Ralph Bellamy, Rosemary Clooney, Kirk Douglas, Blake Edwards, Jose Ferrer (9), John Frankenheimer (2), Larry Gelbart (15), Samuel Goldwyn, Jr., Tyrone Guthrie, Moss Hart (4), John V. Lindsay, Joshua Logan, Mary Martin, Jim Murray, Edward R. Murrow, Tony Randall (2), Martin Ritt, William Shatner, Sidney Sheldon (8), Brandon Tartikoff, Margaret Webster, Margaret Whiting, and Walter Winchell. The letters have a wide range of content, offering insight into casting, production, and personal lives of these Hollywood figures. Many of Ferrer’s letters are signed with sketches; one written from Mexico, signed with a sketch of a bull, dated August 22, 1949, reads in part: “The scenery is great etc…but honestly I’ve never been so depressed by anything. The Indians and peons are kept in such an abysmal state of ignorance and slavery that I can’t take it, because to me a country is its people, and here you really see a people not only ignored but subjugated for the interests of the wealthy.” One from John Frankenheimer dated February 10, 1964, refers to his film Seven Days in May, in part: “I am terribly sorry about the goof, but I had nothing to do with it. I did not make up the credits.” One of the many from Larry Gelbart, dated March 28, 1998, reads in part: “Is there anything anyone ever did that Ben Franklin didn’t do first?” Also included are a few unsigned and secretarial letters from the likes of Noel Coward and presidents Harry S. Truman and Lyndon B. Johnson. In overall fine condition.
