These are eight vintage bromide gelatin silver prints by the German photographer Fred Koch from the 1920s. The eight prints depict the motifs ‘Reflections Pelikanol’, ‘Reflections spherical vase’, ‘Reflections Prince or clown’ and ‘Reflections herb’. The austere elegant studies by Fred Koch range between science and art. In their formal aesthetic they reduce the depicted to their substance, similar to Albert Renger-Patzsch’s work. The stamps on the reverse prove that Fred Koch took these photos for the Folkwang Verlag. The prints were generated from the negatives under the supervision of Ernst Fuhrmann, the director of the publishing house. Fuhrmann gave the archive to Wilhelm Arnholdt when he left Germany.

The photographs bear verso on the cardboard a typographically inscribed label with information of title, date and photographer. Verso on the cardboard are also the stamps ‘Folkwang Verlag, Photo: Fred Koch’, ‘Wilhelm Arnholdt Maschinensetzerei Hamburg 20, Falkenried 42’ as well as ‘Maya Heya Isolde Arnholdt’. The photographs are besides slight traces of age and wear in good condition. The dimensions are each 17 x 12 cm.
